Así, el autor orquesta los argumentos más encontrados -vuelve a Aristóteles, pasa por Zich y Veltruský, Ortega y Reyes, etc.- y escenifica con ejemplos la oscilación del concepto, que ha ido del textocentrismo al escenocentrismo a lo largo de su historia.

Diverging Paths? investigates an important question, to which the answers must be very complex: “why did certain sorts of institutionalisation and institutional continuity characterise government and society in Christendom by the later Middle Ages, but not the Islamic world, whereas the reverse end-point might have been predicted from the early medieval situation?”

Social science from Western countries continues to have the greatest global influence, but the field is expanding rapidly in Asia and Latin America, particularly in China and Brazil. In sub-Saharan Africa, social scientists from South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya produce 75% of academic publications. In South Asia, barring some centres of excellence in India, social sciences as a whole have low priority. Gracias a una renovada historiografía, el crédito se ha venido perfilando en los últimos decenios como una de las categorías centrales del mundo económico, social y político de la Europa de los siglos XVI y XVII. Los circuitos de abastecimiento y de destino del crédito atraviesan toda la sociedad sobre un telón de fondo en el que se alternan embriones de racionalidad económica con lógicas de reciprocidad y vecindad.
